Війна позбавила мільйони дітлахів дитинства, адже її апокаліптичний вибух співпав для них із початком життя. Вони хильнули горя повною чашею, можливо, занадто великою для маленької людини. Скільки їх загинуло від куль та снарядів? Скільки силоміць вивезено на чужину? Скільки знищено у таборах? Скільки убито ненародженими?
Страждання, голод, смерть – саме вони зробили дітей «дорослими», виховавши в них недитячу силу волі, сміливість, здатність до самопожертви.
У цьому молосі діти виявлялися скрізь: серед руїн і попелищ, у шанцях і лісових сховках, у тимчасових помешканнях-халупах і виробничих приміщеннях; підносилися у надлюдському фізичному існуванні та діяннях совісті. Вони щиро вірили, що їхні зусилля допоможуть перемогти війну. І ця здається непомітна дитяча підтримка чи просто присутність часто творила дива – пом’якшувала серця дорослим зі зброєю, не даючи багатьом із них переступити межу людяності.
Були й діти, яких разом із батьками винищували по ярах та ямах, кидали до таборів, де, відповідно пануючим державно-ідеологічним установкам чи то через чиїсь особисті потреби, піддавали моральній нарузі та фізичному насиллю. За колючим дротом вони робили свій перший ковток повітря, плекалися й пізнавали цей божевільний світ.
Війна характерно уніфікує й усистемлює людину у її обширі, спричиняє цілковиту деструкцію соціалізації особистості. Однак акцентно дитячий життєплин викриває нутро цього парадоксального (людинотворного та водночас відверто протилюдяного) явища, що безосібно поглинає, ламає, знищує. Кожен предмет із музейної колекції, який розповідає про цей буттєвий вимір, надзвичайно цінний для глибинного емоційного усвідомлення тотального гуманітарного руйновища, наслідково-невід’ємного від використання зброї.
Фондозбірня Музею містить свідоцтва про народження та хрещення дітей, різноштибний учнівський реманент, листи, малюнки, особисті речі та фото дітлахів, чиє дитинство припало на період воєнного лихоліття. Проте серед цього розмаїття джерел майже немає іграшок… І не тому, що їх не було. Вони були. У хлопчиків – це переважно відстріляні патрони, саморобні, здебільшого з дерева, гвинтівки, пістолети і шаблі, а у дівчаток – власноруч зроблені з хустин та шматків тканини ляльки-пеленалки та зшиті торбинки з червоним хрестом...
Мовою музейних артефактів ми спробуємо розкрити дитячий всесвіт у всепоглинаючому мороці війни. Всесвіт, що не зумів їй протистояти та всесвіт, що наперекір усьому – вистояв і вижив…
 
Millions of children were deprived of their childhood because of armed conflict, as its apocalyptic explosion coincided with the beginning of their lives. They, being too young, have experienced grief to the fullest. How many of them died from bullets and shells? How many were forcibly taken abroad? How many were killed in the camps? How many were killed unborn?
Suffering, hunger, death – they were the ones that made children “adults”, upbringing in them non-child strength of will, courage, ability to self-sacrifice.
In difficult life conditions children were everywhere: among the ruins and ashes, in trenches and hiding places in the forest, in temporary dwellings and industrial premises; they exalted in superhuman physical existence and acts of conscience. They sincerely believed that their efforts would help to win the war. And this seemingly inconspicuous child support, or simply the presence, often made wonders – softening the hearts of adults with weapons, not allowing many of them to violate the principles of humanity.
There were also children who, together with their parents, were exterminated in ravines and pits, thrown into camps, where, according to the prevailing state and ideological attitudes or because of someone's personal needs, they were subjected to moral abuse and physical violence. Behind the barbed wire, they took their first breath, were nurtured and learned about this crazy world.
The war characteristically unifies and systematizes man in its world, causes the complete destruction of the socialization of the individual. However, the fluidity of children's lives reveals the inner world of this paradoxical (humane and at the same time openly anti-human) personality, who inhumanly influences, breaks, kills. Every museum object, which tells about this existence, is extremely valuable for a deep emotional awareness of the moral degradation that is consequently inseparable from the use of weapons.
The museum fund collection contains the birth and baptismal certificates for children, various student equipment, letters, drawings, personal belongings and photos of children whose childhood went on during the war. However, among this variety of objects there are almost no toys… It’s not because there were no toys. They were. For boys the toys were mostly shot cartridges, self-made or wooden rifles, guns and sabers, and for girls – small cloth hanky dolls made with handkerchiefs or napkins and sewn bags with a red cross...
With the help of museum artifacts we will try to reveal the childhood universe in the all-consuming darkness of war. The universe that failed to resist it and the universe that, in spite of everything, endured and survived…
